6 Weeks Pregnant: Morning Sickness

6 Weeks Pregnant: Morning SicknessYou are 6 weeks pregnant! Pass the wastebasket, please... Morning sickness or nausea is a common complaint during the first few months of pregnancy. You may feel turned off by foods you used to enjoy, but nausea is usually worst when your stomach is empty so be sure to eat small, frequent and balanced meals throughout the day. So-called “morning sickness” (it can, cruelly, occur at any time of the day) can last as late as your ninth month so it’s important to adjust now and be sure you eat properly and rest whenever possible. Consider carrying barf bags in the car - it’s good preparation for those future family road trips, anyway.

While you suffer from morning sickness, your little monkey is growing at a furious pace. She’s now about a quarter of an inch long and beginning to develop the eyes and ears you’ll soon stare at and buds where arms and legs will grow. Her heart has developed and is beating 100 to160 times per minute – twice as fast as yours! Brain, bones and muscles are all forming and she’s still just the size of a lentil bean. One powerful, powerful lentil bean.

When you put together the morning sickness, the sore boobs, the crippling fatigue and the near constant temptation to hurl household objects at your partner when he complains he’s “tired,” you’re probably wondering why other women seem to like being pregnant so much. It does start to get better in a few more weeks, but take solace in the fact that all your torment is due to the enormous changes happening inside you. You’re not sick, you’re not lazy. You’re pregnant. Miracle of life, gift from above... but sometimes it sucks. So take a nap when you can, ask for help when you need it and don’t be afraid to throw out the “p” word to get a bit of special attention.
