At about 16 inches and close to 3 pounds, your little acrobat fills most of your uterus, which leaves a little less room for thrashing, spinning and somersaulting. This doesn’t mean she stops thrashing, spinning and somersaulting – it just means those movements are intruding a bit more on your organs and ribcage than previously. Since most babies are around 20-22 inches at birth, most of her growth in the next 10 weeks will be weight and not length. She is probably curled up in the “fetal” position, with hands together near her face, legs bent and crossed in front of her. Aww....
With just over two months to go, you’re probably starting to get ready for the big day (or night – you don’t get to choose). Most couples take childbirth and parenting classes in the final stages of pregnancy. It’s also a great idea to pack your delivery bag for you and baby, and to take a tour of your hospital or birthing center so you’ll feel more comfortable when you arrive to... do your thing. Here are a few essentials to toss in your delivery bag:
- Nursing bra & pads
- Pajamas
- Comfy clothes to come home in (do not pack your pre-pregnancy jeans – ARE YOU CRAZY? It took you 10 months to get that big... you’ll need some time to shrink back too.)
- Toiletries
- Sanitary pads
- Cash for snacks and excited phone calls after baby arrives
- Diaper bag with diapers and wipes
- Comfy clothes for baby to come home in – include lots of layers so you can keep baby warm, and don’t forget socks and hat
- Car seat
- Music, photo or anything you desire to aid you in labour
If you’re planning to labour at home you should begin gathering your supplies for labour according to your midwife’s instructions. No matter where you’re planning to deliver, now is a good time to prepare your delivery bag. Some of these little babies like to sneak up on you when you’re least expecting it.
