Here’s an instalment from the files of “Things no one tells you about pregnancy.” You have stopped running to the toilet every other hour to regurgitate what precious food you’ve managed to get into your tummy. Now everything you’re putting in... is still in there. Constipation. It’s not nice but it is normal. You can ease it by drinking lots of water and consuming as much fiber as humanly possible. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains are all great sources of natural fiber that will help things... well, evacuate.
Your baby is now three inches long – about the size of a jumbo shrimp - and weighs close to an ounce. On those tiny little hands there are now fingerprints! Her skin is still so paper-thin that her organs and veins are visible from the outside, but otherwise she looks like a tiny, amazing little person. Instead of a giant head on legs, your baby looks like a lollipop – her body has grown so that her head now makes up only about one-third of her length. Over the coming weeks she will continue to morph into more human, less lollipop-esque proportions. But, other than that, she looks like a person. Really.
Now that you are 13 weeks pregnant and your first trimester has ended, the risk of miscarriage is much lower. You are also, perhaps, “glowing” (this is different from the “sweating” you have been doing for a couple of months already). Hormones cause blood to rush to your face and extra oil secretion to give you that flushed, dewy glow. On the other hand, if you tend toward oily skin normally, you might be seeing more acne than usual. Acne during pregnancy will not seem particularly “glowy.” Perhaps you are even seeing some “backne” or “neckne.” Acne during pregnancy happens and it’s temporary. Swipe your nephew’s Clearasil and scrub away.
