At 12 weeks pregnant, your baby has grown to about 2 ½ inches long, around the size of a small lemon. She’s a little more active than a lemon. She can now suck her thumb (Awwww.....) and she has reflexes. Reflexes mean if you (or your somewhat insensitive and still confused first-born) poke her, she’ll move. If this is not your first child, you can mark this time as the beginning of sibling rivalry. Her (or his) reproductive organs are completely developed and are distinctly male or female, but your health care provider won’t usually order an ultrasound to determine sex until around weeks 18 to 20, when it’s a bit more accurate.
Have you announced your pregnancy to everyone? This is usually the time most women feel secure to spread the news to friends, family and coworkers. That might be partly due to the fact that you are tired of people eyeing your midsection and widening rear end, then quickly glancing away with that guilty look that screams, “I don’t think you’re fat, I was just staring into space and your gigantic ass got in the way.” This is an awkward time for your body-image and an even more awkward time for your wardrobe choices. Not quite big enough for pregnancy clothes but can’t squeeze yourself into your favourite outfits? Do a little shopping trip for a few essentials to help you get through these in-between weeks. Try a fabric band designed to hold your pre-pregnancy jeans on your widening belly with the button (and maybe even the zipper) undone. Find a more comfortable, bigger bra – many women rise up to a cup size by this point in pregnancy and you can expect to grow 1-2 sizes total before you’re done. Choose a few flattering, flowing tops that skim away from what used to be your waist. Or announce the news and let it all hang out. Either way, you’ll feel more comfortable.
