TOPIC: Speech support for kids.
#3484
Speech support for kids. 1 Month, 1 Week ago Karma: 5
My ds has always had a lisp and the L sound is a W instead. I had asked our Dr. before if he needed speech support and he said no. Now that he is in kindergarten they have "coded" him. He speaks well but there are a few letters that he doesn't say the sounds right.

While they are working with him at school i would like to find some sights or activities that I could do with him at home to support him.

Any ideas?

could you play some games that get him to talk? I'd have to research some but there must be some fun board games that would be good...

Hi there,
My name is Lisa and I am the manager and instructor at a new Literacy and Language Centre here in Calgary called the Sound Connections Centre and it sounds like we might be just what you are looking for.

IMO you should take him to a speech professional and have them teach you how best to help him. It's expensive but therapy is really worth it to the success of your child. He will be more confident because of it.

He has a speech therapist at school that works with him and they did send me home some pictures to go over with him for sounds.

I am just looking for some other things I can do to help him along.

I know, and that is why I suggested going to a therapist. Each different speech disorder, requires completely different techniques. When you go to a therapist who specializes or has a lot of knowledge in your particular issue, they can teach you to help him. Looking at cards is not the same. When you go to a private therapist, you can be more involved and see what they are doing. When my son only went to the early intervention (school) therapist, I would get a paper every time he went, but it didn't teach me how to best help him. When I started taking him to private therapy in conjunction with the EI therapist I was able to see it and put it into practice in our home.

Maybe you have the option of sitting in on a few speech sessions at your child's school?
