The latest from our Heart and Soul

juppylogoThe Juppy® Baby Walker arrived at the perfect time. My son is in that 'can crawl but prefers standing up' stage where he doesn’t yet have complete control over his balance but enjoys making steps towards walking when assisted. But, as every parent knows, those early days of learning to walk can wreak havoc on your back. All that leaning over to provide hand held support of your little one leaves you searching for the heating pad.

juppystorageThe Juppy is made of durable, machine washable fabric that is gender neutral. It is comfortable for both baby and parent to use and is easily transportable because it folds into a very small and convenient package. It can be tucked in your purse or diaper bag with ease meaning it can be used virtually anywhere you go – the park, the beach, on your lawn or in your hallways.

You simply place your child in the walker much like putting them into a pair of pants in that their legs go through two leg openings. The zipper is then used to secure the child within the one size walker. Two long adjustable straps act as the handles for the device allowing you to provide upright support to your little walker.

Your child feels a sense of security in knowing they will not fall down because you are continuously providing the necessary support of their body weight when required, allowing them the freedom to cruise along if they are so inclined. Your child feels a sense of confidence in exploring the new world of walking and you feel confident that they are receiving the support they need in order to prevent physical mishaps.

juppyMy son loves using the Juppy and it is amazing to see the difference between how quickly and confidently he walks when in the Juppy versus holding onto my hands while trying to walk. He can concentrate on moving his feet instead of simultaneously remembering to hold on tightly to my hands as well as move his feet.

If I were to make one suggestion for improvement for the Juppy it would be in providing softer or better padded straps for the walker. I found that the straps caused some discomfort in my hands after supporting the weight of my son for extended periods of time. Perhaps a padded grip that could easily slide along the length of the strap so it’s placement could be selected based on the user’s preference would alleviate this issue.

The bottom line is you can assist your little one in learning the skills necessary to become upright and mobile without sacrificing your posture or your pocket book. The Juppy Baby Walker is extremely affordable and would make a great shower gift.

leghuggerslogoI don’t think I’ve been as excited to try a piece of clothing on my son as I was when I received the Agoo® Leg Huggers in the puzzle fun pattern. The first thing I noticed about the Leg Huggers was how fun the pattern was and then once I actually touched them I realized how soft and comfortable the hypoallergenic bamboo is. It goes without saying that any baby that is sporting Leg Huggers is adorable – but the one size Leg Huggers are also environmentally friendly which scores huge points for this mother.

leg_huggersBamboo is a sustainable resource that provides natural UV protection and is not only antibacterial but wicks away moisture from the body. It is also stain resistant! Take also into consideration that bamboo does not require the use of pesticides, insecticides or fertilizers to grow and you have a great product that also biodegrades.

The Leg Huggers are super soft and comfy (so much so that I wish they came in adult sizes) and stay in place when worn. No slouching socks or pant legs riding up to worry about. Just comfortable clothing that is fun to wear.

I love that they protect my son’s knees and legs while he’s learning to crawl around on the floor and it makes diaper changes a breeze when he wears them because I don’t have the hassle of getting pants on and off of a squirmy baby. Being unrestricted by pants also means he is better able to work on his crawling skills. Because he is cloth diapered, the leg huggers also allow us to show off the cute colors of his diapers.

The Leg Huggers come in various patterns for boys and girls and are but one offering of Agoo®. Check out the website for all kinds of fantastic bamboo clothing for your active urban kid! If you're on Facebook, you can also join their fan page.

safety1stlogoAs a mom of three young kids, I've gone through my fair share of car seats. So when I heard about the new Safety1st Complete Air convertible car seat with Air Protect(TM) technology, I must admit I was a little skeptical. Perhaps my feelings would be different if I had experienced a side-impact collision with my kids in the car.

According to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), side impact crashes represent 30% of all fatalities in passenger vehicles -- head trauma being the most common of all injuries suffered by children. After I watched the side impact video, I could understand why.

I was fortunate enough to try one of the new Complete Air car seats with my two year old. Now I wasn't about to test the safety aspect of the car seat on my vehicle, but according to Dorel, the distributor of Saftey1st products in Canada, the Complete Air is the first car seat to provide protection against side impact crashes:

Through the precise release of air, Air Protect(TM) shields children from side impact intrusion and immediately reduces crash forces where the child is most vulnerable -- the head.

When I compared hitting the headrest on my daughter's old car seat to the new Complete Air with Air Protect(TM) headrest, what a difference. My hand is cushioned on the Air Protect(TM) versus hitting covered plastic on the old seat. And that's my hand. I'd hate to think if it was my daughter's head.

What I was able to try was the easy of installation and use as well as comfort.

INSTALLATION
The seat was actually quite easy to install, especially with the Universal Anchorage System (UAS). I believe this is an updated LATCH system. As a convertible car seat, it's designed to be used from infancy (2.3-18kg/5-40lbs and 48-91cm/19-36in) to child (10-23kg/22-50lb and 74-114cm/29/45in). There is a built in stand at the bottom back of the carseat that enables you to set it up in the reclined rear facing position when folded under and the upright forward facing position when it's pulled out (like a kickstand). We set our seat forward facing for my daughter. The stand made it easy to fit snuggling in the bucket seat without any concern or wobbling.

The car seat actually looked wider than our current seat but we were able to fit it in the second row seat with the cup holder AND have both armrests down (we couldn't do that with our last seat).

You can install the Complete Air car seat using either you vehicle selt belts or the Universal Anchorage System (UAS), which we used and most new cars in Canada have anchors built in already. In our van our we installed the Complete Air car seat in the second row with our two older kids (in booster seats) in the third row. The tether strap adjustor (which is required in Canada for forward facing child seats) sits right where my oldest daughter's feet rest. I don't believe my daughter could release the slack accidently (it's released by just pulling the tether adjuster down toward the hook) but it isn't in an ideal position.

carseatEASY OF USE
My daughter is still able to get into the seat on her own, which is important since she's going through her independence stage. I like that the buckles snap in individually versus connecting as one and than snapping in. We had a seat with that combined buckle structure and always seemed to struggle getting the final buckle to latch. The chest buckle is similar to our last car seat with the exception that it has an illustration indicating exactly where the chest buckle should rest on your child. I actually liked this little reminder. Even after all my carseat experience I sometimes forget where that positon is.

My husband, who has bigger hands, mentioned that he felt the fabric flap over the buckle release (located between your child's legs, at the bottom front of the car seat) is kind of tight to get your finger under to reach the release. But it hasn't stopped him from being able to release my daughter from her seat.

I really like the easy to adjust headrest height, especially as my daughter grows. I now avoid the hassle of removing the car seat in order adjust the height straps and the head protection is always where my daughter's whole head is. The car seat is easy to transfer to my husband's car if he needs to take our daughter someplace. And if you are flying and need to take a car seat on the plane (required for kids under 2 when sitting in their own seat), the Complete Air is aircraft certified.

COMFORT
If you were to ask my daughter what car seat she prefers her old one or her new one, she'll answer her new one. She really likes her new car seat. I was worried that the headrest would block most of her view, but the way the seat seems to sit she can still look out her window, no problem.

The seat doesn't have much padding in the seating area which can make for a bit of discomfort on long car rides, but it's not that different from any of the other car seats we've owned and actually my daughter doesn't seemed too bothered. My daughter actually looks more comfortable in the Complete Air than in her old seat; she seems to sit back more and be surround more in the seat and upper body part of the chair.

I know the Air Protect(TM) head rest is designed for safety but it's also great for regular use. If my daughter falls asleep in the car, and what toddler doesn't, it's like she's resting her head on a pillow.

Like most car seats, the material can be removed for washing, except for the material around the headrest. These parts, if they become dirty, can just be spot cleaned with soap and water, as can the straps. Honestly, I honestly find removing and replacing the material is so much work, I usually try to spot clean any mess.

The Safety 1st Complete Air with Air Protect(TM) convertible car seat is only available at Babies R Us (in store or online) and retails for $299.00 Cdn. The price point puts the Complete Air car seat in line with most of the highend car seats, plus it includes added safety and convenience features. I know if I was in the market for a new car seat, the Complete Air would be at the top of my list. It has safety features no other car seat seems to offer, it's easy to install and use, looks stylish and my daughter seems very comfortable in it.

attitudeAs a mom who cloth diapers, I’m obviously concerned about my consumer decisions with regards to the impact my family makes on the environment. However, there are times when we need to make purchasing decisions based on convenience that may take us outside our typical comfort zone. While I’m not a fanatical tree hugger by any stretch of the imagination, it is good to know there are companies out there striving to provide products for parents that minimize environmental impact.

When I was asked to review the Bio-Spectra ATTITUDE® Eco-Friendly Diapers, I agreed because I believed that providing an opinion on a product that could easily be seen as a worthy opponent to cloth diapering from an environmental impact point of view would be interesting.

attitudediapersI used the diapers on my son for a week and was pleasantly surprised at how well they worked. The diapers were soft to the touch and had adjustable Velcro-like fasteners that kept the diaper in place and secure. While using the diapers my son did not experience any diaper rash which speaks volumes as most other disposable diapers give him a rash within a day of wearing them. I might note that not once in the nearly 7 months that he has been cloth diapered has he suffered from a rash so to find a comparable product that I know will be kind to his little behind is noteworthy. I found the absorbency to be outstanding because he tends to be a heavy wetter. In fact, I used them overnight for the duration of the full week and for a baby who tends to sleep 10-12 hours straight, not once did his diaper leak.

size3ATTITUDE® products are manufactured with a commitment to minimize not only environmental impact through the use of renewable and plant-based resources but the company also strives to provide products that contain ingredients that are bio-degradable and non-toxic. The diapers use 100% biodegradable & compostable PLA in the back and top sheets and contain 100% FSC certified wood pulp in the fluff. I also love that the packaging for the diapers is completely biodegradable.

In conclusion, the diaper worked extremely well for my family from both an environmental as well as health conscious perspective. I would have no reservations in recommending the diapers to those who cloth diaper who may find themselves in a situation where a disposable is a better option for logistical reasons. I would also highly recommend them as an alternative to those who may not find themselves in a financial position to invest in a cloth diaper stash but who would like to use a disposable diaper that will not negatively impact the environment. When one considers the number of diapers entering the landfills on a daily basis, every little bit we do to lessen the burden on our fragile environment is a step in the right direction.
